Dear Shimmyshowcase Dancers & Friends,
It has been a long
time since I sent out any Shimmyshowcase correspondence. All this time I was waiting for (1) a
sufficient reduction in COVID-19 risk and (2)
Viento y Agua to complete their indoor remodeling effort and return to
their pre-COVID operating hours.
Unfortunately, while LA County has made progress on (1), it appears that
Viento y Agua has made permanent changes that do not favor Shimmyshowcase’s
return. Furthermore Bela (Viento y
Agua’s owner) has relocated to Washington to care for his ailing father.
I am grateful to all
of you who supported Shimmyshowcase throughout its 17 year run in Long
Beach. Throughout the seemingly
never-ending pandemic closures, I held out hope that we would return to our
Long Beach home, in triumph over COVID-19.
Sadly, it looks like Shimmyshowcase at Viento y Agua has become yet
another casualty of the pandemic.
Given the economic
conditions of the times, I think it is extremely unlikely that we could find
another venue that would provide us what Viento y Agua so generously offered—a
place to dance with a sound system with no financial strings attached.
On the bright side, there are two upcoming belly dance events
you might want to check out:
