SHIMMY SHOWCASE

Shimmyshowcase began in 2003 at Coffee Haven in Long Beach. In 2011 we moved to Viento y Agua Coffee House, where we danced every month until COVID-19 brought Shimmyshowcase at Viento y Agua to an end in March 2020. Our search for a new Shimmyshowcase venue yielded a generous offer from the owners of Babouch Moroccan Restaurant in San Pedro, CA! Shimmyshowcase made its spectacular debut at Babouch on Sunday, July 17, 2022 to a restaurant filled to capacity with a large crowd of enthusiastic Shimmyshowcase supporters, many of whom got up to dance with the performers in an impromptu grand finale to finish off a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Although the place and city have changed, Shimmyshowcase continues its original mission to provide a place where all dancers, from beginners to seasoned performers, are welcome to perform in front of a warm, appreciative audience. Performers and guests alike keep returning for the temporary escape from the stress of everyday life into this relaxing and fun environment to explore and enjoy middle eastern inspired dance. ~~ UPCOMING SHIMMYSHOWCASE EVENTS ~~

Shimmyshowcase ended its 2019 season on a high note on November 16 with a well-attended Reggae program featuring stellar performances by Dejah, Alise, Tyna, Tamara, Musa, Meryem Vani, Atlantis, and coordinator Amber Ray.  Thanks to all of you lovely ladies for continuing to share your abundant talent with Shimmyshowcase and thank you also to our wonderful supporters who have been with us for so many years.

I am pleased to announce that our 2020 season will begin on January 18th at 6:30 pm with Saviya and Draca presenting “Dance Around the World.”  We already have three fabulous belly dancers on our program—Jheri St. James, Christina Rizkallah, and Kamar—and would love to have some more, so please email shimmyshowcase@gmail.com so we can sign you up too!

Jheri St. James sent me a story about a recent experience she had which I just had to share with you, our Shimmyshowcase community, so here it is, from Jheri:   “I went to a ME restaurant on a class field trip last Saturday.  It was a stunning example of some of the issues of our dance:  a beautiful dancer in an expensive costume danced to ME dance videos on a huge screen above her head, the food was average, slow, and expensive.  A bunch of ME people came in (15) and paid no attention to the dancer whatsoever, who was navigating waiters, people coming in the door, and other intrusions.  Obviously the people of the lands of its origin do not see what we do--belly dance as a stunning art form that is really only the Cinderella of the dance world.  So, showcases like Shimmy Showcase are so important to help us nourish this precious beauty, and keep it alive, until the world at large can ‘see’ what we do.”
