SHIMMY SHOWCASE

Shimmyshowcase began in 2003 at Coffee Haven in Long Beach. In 2011 we moved to Viento y Agua Coffee House, where we danced every month until COVID-19 brought Shimmyshowcase at Viento y Agua to an end in March 2020. Our search for a new Shimmyshowcase venue yielded a generous offer from the owners of Babouch Moroccan Restaurant in San Pedro, CA! Shimmyshowcase made its spectacular debut at Babouch on Sunday, July 17, 2022 to a restaurant filled to capacity with a large crowd of enthusiastic Shimmyshowcase supporters, many of whom got up to dance with the performers in an impromptu grand finale to finish off a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Although the place and city have changed, Shimmyshowcase continues its original mission to provide a place where all dancers, from beginners to seasoned performers, are welcome to perform in front of a warm, appreciative audience. Performers and guests alike keep returning for the temporary escape from the stress of everyday life into this relaxing and fun environment to explore and enjoy middle eastern inspired dance. UPCOMING SHOWCASE CALENDAR AND DANCER OPPORTUNITIES

The SHIMMY SHOWCASE begins at 7 p.m. at I-CANDY COFFEE in Long Beach (1708 E. Broadway -- 562-437-3785).

August 15 - Ilana from the Om Sisters presents “Rock a Belly!” In case it isn’t clear, this is Rock ‘n Roll--belly dance style! We have Haven Bellydance troupe, Draca, and Delilah signed on as guest rockers/dancers to entertain the folks at I-Candy coffee with great dancing set to great music. So come on down, grab a cup of coffee and a slice of cheesecake or sandwich and settle in for a rollicking good time.

August 22 - Spectacular Special Shimmyshowcase event on this evening as Sarah al Nour & Alec Marken present Bands & Bellies 5! Please join us at I-Candy at 7 pm for an extraordinary program of live music by Deep Stirrings for the first half, followed by some fabulous dancing by Katerina, Veronika, IrinaXara, Perizad, Onyx, and BonBon plus Global Groove for the finale. These accomplished dancers perform to a range of styles from fusion to Middle Eastern—something for everyone’s taste! You don’t want to miss this fabulous event!

August 29 - Abraiha is your Shimmyshowcase coordinator for this last traditional weekend of summer, and she welcomes the scintillating Alexandra Samuel and captivating Cynthia back to Shimmyshowcase’s magic carpet to perform for you! September 5—DARK (NO SHIMMYSHOWCASE)—enjoy your Labor Day weekend!

September 12 –A special welcome back after the Labor Day Holiday, Xandra is thrilled to have Marguerite and Rico bringing you Live Music as Elan. She’s also happy that Saphira, Kalila, Gaea, and Kamar will be returning to dance at this Shimmyshowcase. It’s a special treat to have Live music and dancing by such accomplished musicians and dancers, so please come down to I-Candy for an evening sure to delight and entertain.

September 19 - It’s Reggae night at Shimmyshowcase and Amber of the Om Sisters already has Bella and Mandi lined up to mellow the magic carpet at I-Candy. This should be the perfect Shimmyshowcase for those seeking respite from the many stresses life brings these days, where you can relax with a nice cup of tea, specialty beverage or tasty desert and enjoy fine dancing to a reggae beat (but please leave the ganja at home!). September 26 – Saviya coordinates yet another great theme night for Shimmyshowcase. This time we go back to the 60’s! That’s right, it’s another nostalgia-themed showcase highlighting one of the most eventful decades of the 20th century. Dancers who would like to perform for this theme should email us at Shimmyshowcase@gmail.com for a performance spot.
